Norvic Philatelics - GB New Stamps and Special Postmarks

Design Classics Retail Stamp Booklets

Following the set of 10 Design Classics stamps issued in January, Royal Mail will issue three self-adhesive retail books containing key stamps from the Design Classics set and 4 1st class gold Machin definitives.  The Machin definitives have security features

As Royal Mail has changed the programme of issuing these booklets at least twice already this year, we are including information about the 2009 booklets on this page, rather than creating a new page for each booklet.

Schedule of issues:

Booklet 1: 10 March 2009 - Telephone Box and Routemaster Bus

Booklet 2: 21 April 2009 - Mini-car x 2

Booklet 3: was originally announced as containing one Spitfire and one Concorde stamp to be issued 17 September.  This was postponed to January 2010.  But now the third booklet will be issued 18 August, with two Concorde stamps (no Spitfire), and.....

Booklet 4: 17 September 2009 - Mary Quant/mini-skirt x2.

As far as we know, no further booklets in the series will be issued in 2009.

Technical details:
The booklets are printed by Walsall Security Print: stamps are self-adhesive, non-soakable.    (All images are Royal Mail Copyright 2008/9.)
The printing is different, as you can see from the head - see below - and the value is closer to the left in the De La Rue sheet printing.

But comparison with the original sheet stamps also shows that the security slits are quite different - in the booklet there are four, rather than two. The Walsall slits are divided in two at the top and bottom.

These scans show coloured screening within the upright of the figure 1 - this is the security overlay.
